C. Richard Applegate School was built in 1975. The building was designed using the concept of open-space. Each grade level is clustered in a pod-type area that allows for team teaching and cooperative learning.

The school was named after Charles Richard Applegate II. Mr. Applegate served as a member of the Freehold Township Board of Education for thirty years. He was committed to providing a quality education program for all children and made many contributions to the school system and the community.

In 2000, Applegate School celebrated its 25th Anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the staff and students put together a time capsule filled with keepsakes and memories. The time capsule was buried in front of the school and will remain there for the next twenty-five years. Also, the staff and students created a quilt commemorating the important events that happened during the 25th year of school. The quilt is proudly displayed in the main lobby of the school.

With the opening of the Kindergarten wing in 2004, the Applegate school is proud to establish an art gallery to display student art work and special collections.
