Applegate’s traditional January community service project was the ever popular “Souper” Bowl.  Staff and students collected canned goods and nonperishable food items in advance of the NFL championship game. Fifth grade future leaders and classroom teachers kept a count of the cans donated by each class throughout the collection period and the student future leaders packed and organized the thousands of cans collected. In an effort to support students in learning the value of community service efforts, a field trip to the Freehold Area Open Door food pantry was offered to the class that collected the most cans. During their visit, students will receive information and instruction from Open Door’s director, Jeanne Yeacker, to better understand the services provided by the organization. Additionally, students will be responsible for sorting the donations and stocking the shelves at the food pantry in an effort to support this vital resource in our community.

This year’s donations far exceeded any previous years’ collections. Students were seen bringing suitcases on wheels , filled with cans, into school each morning in an effort to increase donations to this extremely worthwhile cause. And the total is….we lost track after 4,000 cans! Applegate School collected more than double our donations from last year. One student even saved up his allowance and used it to purchase 408 cans to donate.

It was decided three classes in the school collected more the 500 cans each and since Open Door could not accommodate a donation of 4,000 cans in one trip, there will be multiple trips to Open Door in the upcoming month.

Mrs. McDow's class, Ms. Shenker’s class, and Mrs. Finn’s classes will all take a trip to the food pantry to deliver our school’s enormous donation and gain a greater appreciation for the service that Open Door provides to so many families in our community.

Congratulations and thank you to all who participated to make this community service project such a wonderful success!
